Friends & Family: given the current COVID-19 global pandemic, we decided to go through with a virtual wedding on December 16th through San Francisco City Hall. Although getting married via a virtual platform was not in our original plans, we are excited to have our marriage conducted through such a historic landmark. san francisco city hall is a monument to the lgbtq+ community and our struggle for recognition and equal rights.

the history of san francisco in the lgbtq+ rights movement has been and continues to be very important to us. before our original wedding plans were cancelled, we had always planned to obtain our marriage license through san francisco city hall. when it came time to decide what our new plans would look like, it was clear that going forward with a city hall wedding was the right choice for us.

a brief history of same-sex marriage

on february 10, 2004, california mayor gavin newsom historically announced that san francisco city hall would start issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, even though federal law at the time held that marriage was strictly between a man and a woman. between february-march 2004, 4,096 same-sex couples were married before the california supreme court halted & then later voided those ceremonies. it wasn’t until june 16, 2008 that same-sex marriage licenses began to be issued again in california. however, only a few months later, california passed proposition 8, creating a constitutional ban on on same-sex marriages. it took 2 more years of fighting before prop 8 was overturned in 2010.

it wasn’t until june 26, 2013 (5 years later!) that marriage equality was passed across our country. on june 26, 2015, in obergefell v. hodges, the u.s. supreme court legalized same-sex marriage across our nation, yielding equal rights to all.

Because love always wins; not even a pandemic can stop our love!

Although we were not able to share this special day with our friends and family as originally planned, we appreciate your understanding and efforts to continue to social distance and stay safe. it breaks our heart that currently over 300,000 (and growing) people have unnecessarily died of covid-19 in the united states. globally. over 1.65 million people have died from covid-19. we urge our friends & family to take this virus seriously and sacrifice as we have to reduce the death toll of the covid-19 pandemic.

but on a brighter note….

We look forward to hopefully being able to celebrate not only our love but everyone’s health & well-being with you all in the future! and We can’t wait for the next adventure that lies ahead as we embark on this journey as wives for life!
